If you are not sure what the difference is between a nephrologist and urologist, you are not alone. Many people are unsure of the difference between the two. This makes it difficult to know which of these medical professionals to call when you have a problem. In reality, these doctors' paths cross quite often and, depending on the problem, it is possible that you will need a nephrologist, a urologist or both.
Nephrologists focus on how the kidneys work and evaluate the function of the kidneys. Urologists are more concerned with anatomical kidney problems and deal with the rest of the urinary tract including the ureters, bladder, urethra and prostate as well.
Unlike urologists, nephrologists do not perform surgery.
